Senior Tips: Using a Cane Correctly

Using a cane for mobility may become a necessity during ones life, but using it correctly is not as intuitive as you might think. Not using a cane correctly can not only be problematic, but can actually lead to other detrimental physical issues. Unfortunately, it is not as easy as it sounds to spot complications and misuse of a cane, but with the following tips and observations through the eyes of a kinesiologist, you or your loved one can master walking with a cane.

The average person may not see anything wrong with this picture, but through the eyes of a kinesiologist, these problem areas stand out;





What we see from top-down:

  • Looking Down - Top Heavy, can lead to Loss of Balance

  • Rounded Shoulders - Causes Compressed Chest for Breathing

  • Hips Tucked In -Can cause Glute Weakness

The good news is that there are strengthening exercises that can help greatly. One that we would recommend is;



Shoulder External Rotation

3 sets of 5-8 repetitions

Benefits:

  • promotes back extension

  • opens chest decreasing chest compression

  • increases strength in the shoulder joint
